Those Aussie Icons We Know and Love Part 2

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman could have quite easily been typecast in his role of Wolverine, which he played for 17 years in both the X-Men movies and the solo Wolverine spin-offs. Since then, however, he’s appeared in a wide spectrum of films, including The Greatest Showman, The Prestige, and Les Miserables. As a flexible theatrical and film actor, Jackman undoubtedly ranks among Australia’s finest. In 2019, he was named among the Queen’s Birthday Honours when he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for his services to the global community and performing arts. He’s also an extremely gifted singer.

Olivia Newton-John

Olivia Newton John’s iconic performance as Sandy in Grease and her dancing around in neon workout clothes in her music video for Physical are both unforgettable. Having sold 100 million records, winning four Grammys, and performing on one of the most popular soundtrack albums of all-time, Olivia isn’t just one of Australia’s most iconic singer-songwriters, but is one of the biggest icons in music history.

Russell Crowe

It could be argued that Russell Crowe was one of the biggest stars of 2002, having given two critically acclaimed performances in a row, in Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. Besides that, Crowe’s performances in Master and Commander and A Beautiful Mind (both with Paul Bettany) established one of the more convincing acting duos in film. He also became the man Hollywood would call upon for a serious and powerful performance in fantasy films and historical epics alike. He made his behind-the-camera debut with The Water Diviner in 2015.

Erica Bana

While Eric Bana’s entertainment career began in comedy on Australian television, he enjoyed a successful career in Hollywood in the 2000s, thanks to three highly successful movies, starting with 2001’s Black Hawk Down. He’d later enjoy starring roles in The Alter Boleyn Girl, Munich, Troy, and Hulk, along with an impressive five appearances in 2009 that included Star Trek and The Time Traveler’s Wife. Since then, Bana has maintained a lower profile, with a number of supporting roles to his name.

Chris Hemsworth

The Hollywood star became a pop couture phenomenon perhaps quicker than anyone else on this list. His role as Thor in the incredibly successful Marvel franchise brought him instant fame and celebrity, winning him fans the world over and his movies making billions at the box office. That’s not all. He also appeared in Cabin in the Woods and Rush, with both movies allowing him to show off his diverse range, proving that he’ss more than just eye candy.
